New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: August 30, 2024
New Music Friday means new music from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds! But that’s not all…there’s the debut album by Auckland-born, London-based Molly Payton and much, much more.
The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda picks these five new releases for your consideration:
- Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Wild God (Bad Seed/PIAS) Essentially a Nick Cave/Warren Ellis record with Radiohead’s Colin Greeenwood playing bass on about half the tracks. Here’s what Mr. Cave has to say about it: “I hope the album has the effect on listeners that it’s had on me. It bursts out of the speaker, and I get swept up with it. It’s a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious. There is never a masterplan when we make a record. The records rather reflect back the emotional state of the writers and musicians who played them. Listening to this, I don’t know, it seems we’re happy.”
2. Molly Payton – YOYOTTA (Self) The title stands for: You’re On Your Own This Time Again. Now based in London, the Aucklander has been through a lot to get to this place. According to her PR: YOYOTTA is a deeply personal project that depicts the artist at her most vulnerable. While struggling to navigate the music industry as a teenager, Payton’s father was sent to prison and her life was in disarray. Molly says, “when it happened, I had just released my first music and started to find my footing in the industry, and I felt as if by pausing and taking the time I needed to process it all I’d be giving up my ‘shot’. So, I kept pushing through, releasing and avoiding it.” Click here to watch Molly perform Asphalt, the leadoff track, at The 13th Floor.
3. Laurie Anderson – Amelia (Nonesuch) This is Anderson’s first “proper’ album in 6 years and is centered around pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart’s tragic last flight. “The words used in Amelia are inspired by her pilot diaries, the telegrams she wrote to her husband, and my idea of what a woman flying around the world might think about,” Anderson explains. Helping bring her musical vision to life are Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno with conductor Dennis Russell Davies, Anohni, Gabriel Cabezas, Rob Moose, Ryan Kelly, Martha Mooke, Marc Ribot, Tony Scherr, Nadia Sirota, and Kenny Wolleson.
4. Steve Wynn – Make It Right (Fire) The Dream Syndicate frontman’s first solo album since 2010 is released today and so is his memoir, I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True (Jawbone Press). Make It Right features contributions from Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Linda Pitmon (The Baseball project) and a cast of dozens. ‘I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True’ is the vivid and revealing memoir from leader and founder of one of the most revered indie-rock bands of the 1980s, The Dream Syndicate. Watch this space for a revealing 13th Floor MusicTalk interview with Steve Wynn.
5. The Bug Club – On The Intricate Workings Of The System (Sub Pop) Cool new music from Wales! The full title of scrappy Welsh duo The Bug Club’s first album for Sub Pop is On the Intricate Inner Workings of the System By Means of Popular Music Or the Contemplation Of Pretty Faces, Tinned Bubbles and Strife which, as they note, is ‘long as fuck’ even it it doesn’t quite approach Fiona Apple length. It’s definitely the longest thing about the album which, like previous records, delivers two-minute DIY-punk blasts about mundane subjects (this time topics include beer and ‘the worst shoes in the UK.’).” Meet the duo here on The 13th Floor when we post our MusicTalk interview with Sam and Tilly
