New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: November 8, 2024

New Music Friday is here! With all the unsettling news from the past week, what better way to relax than with a stack of new albums. Here are 5 that The 13th Floor thinks you should check out.

The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda picks these five new releases for your consideration:

  1. Adam HattawayAdam HattawayHigh Horse (Leather Jacket) Adam gets help from his Haunters and producer Marlon Williams.  And look for guest appearances from Erny Belle and Tess Liautaud…so not really a solo album as much as a musical shift to something “mellow and dark”. Click here to watch the 13th Floor MusicTalk interview with Adam and then saddle up that High Horse.

2. Tom IrvineThe Tom Irvine BandUnder The Wharf (Bonfire Baby) More new Kiwi music, this one fronted by Tom Irvine and produced by Dylan Storey. Along with Dylan and Tom, the Tom Irvine Band includes bassist Matt Shanks and drummer Cole Goodley. You can watch an interview with Tom Irvine recorded at The 13th Floor here and you can catch the band playing live tonight at Cupid Bar.

3.Primal Scream Primal ScreamCome Ahead (BMG) The band’s first album in eight years. Bobby Gillespie said in a press release, “I’m very excited about this album in a way that you would be making your first record. If there was an overall theme to Come Ahead it might be one of conflict, whether inner or outer. There is also a thread of compassion running through the album. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say, ‘come ahead!’”

Our Girl4. Our Girl The Good Kind (Bella Union) The Good Kind explores themes of sexuality, relationships, community, and illness, and was produced by John Parish, Fern Ford, and the band’s own Soph Nathan. The album features collaborations with other musicians, including Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who contributed to the title track.

5.King Stingray  King StingrayFor The Dreams (Cooking Vinyl) It’s the Aussie surf-rockers’ second album. “Nothing’s changed in the sense that we’re still who we are, we’re still playing music and enjoying things,” King Stingray say. “But what I think is different about this one is there’s a little bit more lived experience…”
