Okkervil River – In The Rainbow Rain (ATO Records)

In The Rainbow Rain is Okkervil River’s latest album after the release of Away in 2016. Okkervil River is undoubtedly Will Sheff’s brain child, but the 2 years saw him parting ways with many of his band members. You would imagine In The Rainbow Rain to be a 10 track album full of melancholy and pessimism, but it is Sheff’s most uplifting album to date.

The album spans across different elements than Sheff’s usual blend of folk alternative. Love Somebody seems to be an ode to the 80s with synth pop elements, but I dare say it’s one of the tracks to check out. It starts off slow but gradually builds up momentum. The backing female vocals makes it easy to listen and addictive.

If you are looking for more vocal push and pull, take a listen to the classic funk inspired Don’t Move Back to LA. Another stand out track is the album closer Human Being Song where Sheff explores the value of staying alive. Notably, the album was recorded with a string of musicians Sheff toured with and the tracks did not seem out of place.

In the Rainbow Rain is an expansion of genres but it may not sit well with listeners as it may come across as being indecisive. But, understandably this is just Will Sheff penning a fresh start.
