R.I.P. Sylvain Sylvain
We are sad to learn of the death of New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain who has passed away at the age of 69.
Sylvain Sylvain (real name Sylvain Mizrahi) was a founding member of The New York Dolls along with Arthur (Killer) Kane, Billy Murcia, Johnny Thunders and David Johansen. The Dolls released two seminal glam/punk albums (New York Dolls 1973, Too Much Too Soon 1974) before falling apart.
Sylvain and Johansen resurrected The Dolls and performed at Auckland’s St James Theatre in 2007. Now sadly, David Johansen is the last Doll standing.

Sad news… I briefly reviewed their 2010 gig in The Netherlands (Het Paard in Den Haag):
“Glam with a twist of punk, American rock band, The New York Dolls take over from where the Cramps left off. Thirty-nine years after they formed and now like extras from the Pirates of the Caribbean, these granddaddies of punk, singer David Johansson and Marlon Brandoish Syl Sylvain, guaranteed a very colorful show in The Paard last Thursday night.
None of the original energy seems to be lost since their unlikely reunion 6 years ago. Their new (2009) album ‘Cause I sez so’ was produced by Todd Rundgren, who also produced their debut album in 1973. It is full of dirty guitars and crashing drums and is a great showcase for one of the great rock singers of his generation.”
