Rick Derringer Has Died At Age 77: R.I.P.
We are sad to learn that Rick Derringer, guitarist for The McCoys and solo artist, has died, age 77 in Ormond Beach, Florida. An official cause of death was not initially released.
Born in 1947 in Fort Recovery, Ohio, Rick and his brother Randy formed The McCoys in the early 60s, with Rick changing his last name from Zehringer to Derringer and scoring a massive hit in 1965 with Hang On Sloopy, a record that is a garage-rock standard.
Rick went on to work with Johnny and Edgar Winter, producing and playing on the hits Frankenstein and Free Ride by The Edgar Winter Group and then scoring his own solo hit with his version of Rock & Roll Hootchie Koo in 1973.
