Rita Mae – The Nightmare: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Rising indie darling Rita Mae smoulders and soars on her new single ‘The Nightmare’.
It makes way for a deluxe version of her critically-acclaimed EP, SUPERFEELING out on November 24, pre-save HERE
Here’s the blurb with more:
Ethereal, mournful, dark and indulgent, ‘The Nightmare’ captures the intensity of being so haunted by your emotions that you will do almost anything to escape them. “It’s about when the process of getting over a heartbreak causes actual physical pain. The process is written about as a physical place that you go to ‘get better’ – the nightmare!” says Rita Mae.
‘The Nightmare’ was written in Dunedin when Rita Mae says she was feeling cold, lonely, heartbroken and very much in the wrong place. She didn’t return to the track until she began working on the SUPERFEELING project. And even though it felt like it belonged as part of the seven-song EP, which wowed critics on release earlier this year, it still didn’t make the final tracklisting. “But it continued to haunt me. I felt like it had to come out as a bonus track because it simply wouldn’t leave me alone.”
It’s good news for fans of this New Zealand star on the rise, who can expect ‘The Nightmare’ to feature on the SUPERFEELING Deluxe EP, along with the previously unreleased ‘Candy’s House (Comedown Song)’.
Rita Mae has been making ripples in Aotearoa’s alt-indie scene since she started releasing songs like the stirring ‘The Secret’s Out’ in 2021 and then the effortlessly cool ‘Candy’s House’ in 2021.
Earlier this year, Rolling Stone magazine tipped her as “one of eight Kiwis artists tipped to take over”, saying “Music is in her DNA, and Mae’s future as an artist in her own right looks very bright indeed…”
Both ‘The Secret’s Out’ and ‘Candy’s House’ are included on the first release of the SUPERFEELING EP and served as the perfect introduction to this astute songwriter, who promises more to come.
“In a lot of ways this is the final chapter of the ‘SUPERFEELING’ era for me. The stuff that is to come is still me, and still has all my musical and lyrical sensibility that was present in this song, in this project. But the next project is definitely a step in a new direction, representing this new phase of my life.”
