Ronnie Hawkins Has Died at Age 87: R.I.P.
Ronnie Hawkins, the rockabilly rebel-rouser whose backing band, The Hawks, became The Band, has died at age 87.
Born in Arkansas in 1935, Hawkins migrated north to Ontario, Canada bringing fellow Arkansas musician Levon Helm with him. His recording of Mary Lou became a Top 40 hit in the US in 1959.
Eventually The Hawks became The Band as Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and Richard Manual joined up.
The rest, as they say, is history.
