Sam Cullen – That Somebody’s You: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Rising rocker Sam Cullen is back with a vengeance, revealing his new single and video – That Somebody’s You.
Here is the blurb with more:
With a driving beat, a pumping bass and a timeless guitar riff, That Somebody’s You embodies all the qualities of a classic rock ‘n’ roll tune. “It completes your road trip playlist. The song that gets you ready to go out; the song that’ll get you back home. It’s energetic, emotional, optimistic and hopeful,” says Sam.
As the first single from Sam’s upcoming debut album, That Somebody’s You marks a major milestone for the Invercargill-born, now Auckland-based singer and songwriter, who has been carving out his own path in Aotearoa’s rock and pop scene, since first emerging in 2017.
That Somebody’s You runs a gamut of meaning, and encapsulates Sam’s transition into adulthood. “Change, growth, self acceptance, emotional awareness. All of these things make up this song. It was incredibly cathartic to finish,” he says.
Helping to elevate the message of the song is a stunning, cinematic music video, shot over two days in the epic surrounds of central North Island.
“I’d been watching films such as ‘Paris, Texas’ and ‘Badlands’, which served as a lot of the inspiration for this video. The desolate but beautiful landscapes in these films really struck me and we definitely got our own uniquely New Zealand spin on this kind of scenery,” says Sam.
With director/editor Tom Grut at the helm, supported by Jack Berry (DOP), Hugo Wallace and Charlie Saxton, Sam says “It was an absolute pleasure to shoot with a small crew, the luckiest weather imaginable, a red 1984 BMW E30, an evening pub feed, and the best morale one could hope for on-set.”
That Somebody’s You sets the scene for what’s still to come from Sam on his debut album.
“As a 24-year-old, this theme has been a stalwart in my writing for the entire album. It also highlights the grip that time has on us and the stress of thinking that we’re running out of time. All of this being said, the chorus is that optimistic corner of my brain telling me it’s all going to be okay, which is manifested in a huge, catchy chant. I know I’m not the only one who has these conflicting feelings so I’d love this to be both a comfort and an absolute emotional release for listeners.”
Since his 2024 EP, LOVE AGAIN, Sam has honed his influences and figured himself out a little more. Over the past five years, he has steadily climbed the ladder of success; releasing three EPs, playing on some of Aotearoa’s biggest stages, selling out headline shows, playing festivals, including R&V, and support slots around the country.
