Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) Has Died At Age 89: R.I.P.

Sam Moore, one half of the great Stax duo Sam & Dave has died at age 89. The cause of death was post-surgery complications, according to the singer’s rep.

Sam Moore and Dave Prater met in  1961 at an amateur night at the Miami’s King of Hearts Club. After a few years of struggling they finally hit it big when Jerry Wexler signed them to Atlantic Records and passed them to Atlantic’s Southern partner, Stax Records, where Isaac Hayes and David Porter took them under their wing and produced their iconic hits with musical backing from Booker T & the MGs.

They immediately scored with hits like Hold On, I’m Coming and the Grammy-winning Soul Man, both of which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Singles chart, as well as I Thank You and When Something Is Wrong with My Baby. The duo, who performed at Martin Luther King Jr.’s memorial concert at Madison Square Garden following his assassination in 1968, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 by Billy Joel.

Sam & Dave first split up in 1970 due the drug issues but reunited soon after and stayed together until New Year’s Eve 1981 when they last performed together. Dave Prater died in a auto accident in 1988 and Sam Moore just kept on singing.

The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda spoke to Sam Moore in the early 1980’s not long after that last Sam & Dave concert. Give a listen as Sam Moore explains why the final split happened:

Of course many will remember Sam from the exposure he got thanks to The Blues Brothers and their use of Soul Man.
