The Spirit Of Irish Dance Storms To A Stage Near You

From the team that brought you the beloved and acclaimed Celtic Illusion comes Celtica: A New Era of Irish Heritage. This high-octane Irish song & dance spectacular tours to 13 centres across New Zealand this March, bringing the spirit of the Emerald Isle to a theatre near you March 16 – 30, 2021.

Audiences across Aotearoa can expect a world-class performance, with Down Under performers who’ve danced in some of NZ’s favourite dance shows, including Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Celtic Illusion and more. Following in the success of Celtic Illusion, the magic returns to showcase the incredible talents of local performers, with 12 elite New Zealand dancers joined by three Australians to make up the 15-strong troupe.

Under the direction of choreographer and lead performer Anthony Street (Australian Irish Dance Company and creator of Celtic Illusion), the troupe’s mesmerising dance abilities are centre stage in this all-new production. Prepare to witness the fastest taps you’ve ever seen on stage, complete with all the glitz and glamour you’d expect on the Las Vegas Strip!

We are focusing on incredible and entertaining Irish dance and music. The choreography is modern, with obvious references to some of the greats in entertainment such as Bob Fosse, and of course Michael Flatley, my number one inspiration” says Street.

Music lovers will be enthralled and excited by the contemporary Irish score. Reimagined classics, such as Black is the Colour and The Parting Glass, combined with original compositions, all brought to life by live vocals from Dunedin-born singing sensation Sophie Morris. Boasting original compositions from Australian composer Angela Little (Baz Luhrmann’s Australia) and Boston native Steven Skinner (winner, 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations for RENT), the music will be brought to life with Morris’ vocals and live instrumentation from Aucklander Shimna Higgins (fiddle) and Dunedin’s Reenie Pearson (flute & bodhrán).

Celtica is a unique opportunity not only for audiences, but performers too. With our borders closed to international productions, Anthony Street’s determination to champion Kiwi talent not only provides world-class entertainment for audience, but meaningful employment opportunities for Kiwi cast and crew members as well.

Street comments: “I’m incredibly excited to have been given the green light to perform in New Zealand. After a year that none of us saw coming, we are thrilled to provide our troupe of dancers, crew, and production team, with jobs again, as well as helping to support the teams across New Zealand’s venues. Celtica is an unforgettable night at the theatre, and an environment the whole family will enjoy. After all we’ve been through, the show must go on!

Storming across Aotearoa this March, Celtica is a not-to-be-missed spectacular for the whole family.
