There’s A Tuesday/ The Butlers – The Tuning Fork July 31, 2020

Friday night at The Tuning Fork and it’s a sold out show with two bands from Christchurch, The Butlers and There’s a Tuesday. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling like there is a new wave of exciting local talent running rampant through the country while the overseas artists are stuck under lockdown.

I’ve seen quite a few new, young bands that I wouldn’t otherwise have caught over the past few weeks. One of the best was at Tuning Fork this past week.

I’m talking about There’s A Tuesday. The band is led by two very young women, both just 19 years old.  They are Nat Hutton and Minnie Robberds and they both sing and write songs.

We had the pleasure of having the band, including Angus Murray (drums) and Joel Becker (bass) up at The 13th Floor studios for a Video Session earlier in the day, so I decided to check out their live show.

The headliners were another Christchurch band, The Butlers, who, not-coincidentally, features Minnie’s older brother, Walt Robberds as their frontman.

The Tuning Fork was fizzing with youthful energy and There’s A Tuesday did not disappoint. They’ve got wonderful harmonies, catchy songs and a good ear for a cover. Tonight they played Julia Jacklin’s Head Alone and a cheeky version of Don’t You Forget About Me.

The crowd responded with enthusiasm.

They also loved The Butlers, although I will say I found them less interesting than their opening band. Sure, they played with plenty of spirit, but I didn’t really connect with many of their tunes.

Maybe I was too enamoured by There’s A Tuesday.

Do yourself a favour and check out their just-released EP and watch for their 13th Floor Video Session.

And I’m sure they’ll be back at The Tuning Fork, headlining next time.
