Tinn People – Big Fan: November 14, 2024

Tinn People performed at Big Fan this past week and Monique and Den were on the scene…

Tinn PeopleOn a drizzly post-Coldplay eve – at Big Fan, I was lucky enough to experience Tinn People, a four-piece musical outfit from the neighbouring beaches of Muriwai who have evolved into an ‘originals’ band performing lyric laden nostalgic rock with driving guitar and a reveling rhythm section. Lead singer and keyboad player is Kirsty Cooke,  Guitar and Bass…Paul Cooke/George Jakich who adroitly interchange instruments during the show, and on drums (and interval Dad jokes) a true UK Northerner, Steve Duck.

Supporting act (and Muriwai local) Ella Culverwell plays a mix of laid-back acoustic covers and original songs to a small but elevated and receptive crowd, including a supportive & proud-as-punch Dad.

The main act leans heavily on 70’s gypsy rock (evidenced by storming covers of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain and Heart’s Barracuda played expertly.  It’s the originals which give the band space to shine, especially Kirsty’s witchy-woman vocals on Really Into You and Closer (inspired by Kirsty’s son) and Shut the Door Charley.  The rapport between band and audience is evident, including a heartfelt and genuine tribute to those affected by the 2023 Anniversary Weekend floods.   Big Fan is a small but inviting space with superb sound and an artistically inclusive vibe – perfect for the hometown heroes Tinn People to strut their 70’s rock swagger.
