Valerie June – Endless Tree: 13th Floor New Song Of The Day
Valerie June, the GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has toured Australia and played at Bluesfest, has released a new single and video from her forthcoming album, Owls, Omens, and Oracles, out April 11th via
Here is the blurb with more:
Following lead single “Joy, Joy!,” hailed by Paste as “clear-eyed and radical,” and the folksy “Sweet Things Just For You”, which Billboard praised for its “sincere affection”, the new single “Endless Video” was premiered by Valeire and her band last weekend on CBS Saturday Morning, along with “Joy Joy” and the album track “All I Really Wanna Do”.
Valerie June’s new single “Endless Tree” sees June growl, hiss, stutter, and chant her way through an anthemic rocker. “Are you ready to see / A world where we could all be free / As branches of an endless tree?” encourages June. On Owls, Omens, and Oracles, every song is composed with the intention of honoring our interconnectedness, and this message shines throughout “Endless Tree.
June explains, “As we see so much divisiveness and polarization in the world, this song asks listeners if they are ready for a more harmonious and peaceful planet. If what we focus on is what manifests, then, although we don’t always agree with each other, might it still be possible to respect our differences and grow together vs. creating wars? Trees have a secret language that connects them to each other. Without plants and trees, we couldn’t breathe. What can we learn from plants as teachers?” The song’s aptly bright accompanying video was directed by Neta Ben Ezra.
Rooted in the belief that what we focus on is what we manifest, June dreams a songpath forward with Owls, Omens, and Oracles that leaves no one behind. Halfway through a decade of immense and rapid global change, June asserts a multidimensional Blackness steeped in laughter, truth, magic, delight, and interdependence. This album is a radical statement to break skepticism, surveillance, and doom scrolling – let yourself celebrate your aliveness. Connect, weep, change, open.
Throughout the M. Ward-produced Owls, Omens, and Oracles, June’s distinctive Tennessee twang grips the listener. Visceral twists and a fierceness of raw emotion thread textures and tones through the needle of a multi-genre American quilt, striking against notions that voices should always sound polished and pretty. Gracefulness and gentleness harmonize with dissonance, edginess, and precarity in the sharpest parts of her voice.
June’s singular sound is a north star as steady and undeniable as any true love story, telling us to “trust the path.” She is inviting us out of the small boxes that keep us apart from each other, her music creating a space where we are already together, already one. The horizon changes as we get closer to it, but our artist is sure-footed in the face of uncertainty and change. She wants everyone who listens to this music to want to be alive, to love, co-creating a future together.
Valerie June will be the subject of a new exhibit opening at the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in Nashville. In addition to celebrating the release of her new album Owls, Omens, and Oracles her exhibit will feature artifacts such as instruments, clothing, published works, and other items from her storied career. The exhibit’s unveiling will take place on Saturday, April 26 at NMAAM located in downtown Nashville at an event open to the public. June will be joining in person to discuss her new album and exhibit while also providing a guided meditation and reading as well—with the event being livestreamed globally.
