Vikae – Moon City Review – A cool and consuming single
Vikae continues to radiate in her artistic progression. The Indie Pop innovator, aka Veronika Bell has released the fourth song from the forthcoming debut album Inferno.
A gem of an Indie Folk song. Spare and atmospheric production, evoking theatre and dance. She takes elements of Bowie and Kate Bush in her approach and spins a dark tale of love in the spirit realm with hints of all-consuming passion.
Like those two touchstone artists, she is not a conventional Rock’n’Roll or Pop entertainer. She sits on that tradition like one sits on a chair, as John Lennon explained. From there you build your own chairs.
The song starts with a melancholy piano and Bell’s distinctive pitch-perfect controlled voice. A smooth tone without affectation. Surprisingly muscular and Swiftian, as a convenient reference point. As in Taylor.
It’s two in the morning/ It’s raining and pouring/ I never noticed a warning/ right in front of me.
Then bass and drums drop with deep shudders and the trance dance begins. The tone becomes darker and heads to the Midsummer Night’s Dream world. On the accompanying video, Vikae is a seductive Fairy Queen spirit in a Nordic icy blue surround. She has that Aladdin Sane look that graced the iconic album cover.
Red would run the river/ That swept us all away. The singer remains soothing and calm but the cool Ice Maiden is recapturing her prey.
Cool and consuming. Obsessive and aims to enchant.
