13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Kendall Elise – Between Hello And Goodbye

Whoo-hoo! We do love Fridays. There’s always new music and today is no exception as we bring you thing lovely new tune (and video) from Kendall Elise.

The song is Between Hello And Goodbye and gives us a sneak preview of what Kendall’s next album might sound like. And the video features the always fetching Amourous Ava. Here’s the record company blurb with more:

An ode to loss and heartache, ‘Between Hello And Goodbye’ was written and produced by Kendall and recorded with her band The Belgraves at Roundhead Studios with Paddy Hill on engineering duties.

“‘Between Hello And Goodbye’ is about someone coming to terms with the end of a relationship. They have gotten over the initial shock but they are still only just getting by each day,” says Kendall. “They acknowledge that things will be better in time but for now they just want to be allowed to feel sad.”

Cleverly, the feel of the song – with its upbeat indie-country vibe; moody drums and warm bassline – sits in contrast to the subject matter. Kendall also says she wanted to allow space and distance between the vocal and the instrumentation. “There is an anxious heart-beat-like drum that follows a pretenseful whistle, hinting at the protagonist’s attempt to show the world that they are doing ok when deep down they aren’t.”

The song is accompanied by a video produced and directed by the award-winning Amber Beaton.

Kendall was inspired by a video made over lockdown by New Zealand Burlesque Queen Amourous Ava, where she stars as one of her unique and quirky characters.

“I loved the idea of witnessing a glimpse into the daily life of such an offbeat character as they go about their everyday mundane life, and as the viewer you’re privy to some awkwardly personal moments.” With this brief Amber fully conceptualised and hand-built an endearing papier-mâché character that perfectly embodies the song’s themes of fragility and heartbreak, which Amourous Ava brought to life. Amber has produced a visually beautiful, hilarious and relatable glimpse into the everyday life of Heartbreak, personified.

With trademark quirky touches and flawless vocal delivery, Kendall Elise has been turning heads since launching her solo career in 2016 with her debut single ‘Heart Full of Dirt’. It paved the way for her self-produced debut EP ‘I DIDN’T STAND A CHANCE’, released in March 2017.

In 2019, she released her debut album RED EARTH, which debuted at #12 in the NZ Music Album charts and earned Kendall a spot in the Top 3 finalists for the 2020 Recorded Music New Zealand Best Country Artist.

Today’s release of ‘Between Hello And Goodbye’ leaves the door open for the release of her sophomore album in 2021.
