13th Floor New Song Of The Day: Troy Kingi – Aztechknowledgey

Troy Kingi releases his new album, Shake That Skinny Ass All The Way To Zygertron today. The ambitious second record is a concept album that explores galactic sci-fi themes and draws inspiration from 70’s funk pioneers Parliament/Funkadelic.

Aztechknowledgy is the lead-off track from the album.

Here’s the record company blurb:

The concept for this album was conceived by Troy and his little brother as they sat on
deck chairs stargazing in Taupo Bay. What was originally never intended as a concept album quickly became so as Troy created the uniquely-themed song titles and the two dreamt up intricate stories and characters which weave their way throughout. Although the idea of a concept album sounds quirky and unconventional, Troy’s soulful voice and ear for groove offer up a warm and well-grounded sound.

When it came to laying down the record, Troy was not short of quality musicians to call
upon, choosing to collaborate with vintage synthesiser-enthusiast and seasoned
musician Ed Zuccollo (Trinity Roots), and band-mate Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle),
who also took on the role of producer.

Described by the NZ Music Commission as “our Northland treasure”, the Bay of Islands based musician/actor has embarked on an eventful few years with major acting roles in
Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Pa Boys, Mt Zion and The Kick, while also enjoying a
successful music career, being awarded an APRA Silver Scroll for ‘Aotearoa’, a track cowritten with Stan Walker, and receiving rave reviews for his side-project, collaborative
soul band L(())VE & HOPE with Mara TK and Mark Vanilau (Dave Dobbyn).

“Shake that skinny Ass all the way to Zygertron is a fictional account of two people from
different times & dimensions meeting in the cosmos, falling in love and having a child
with golden feet, fulfilling an ancient prophesy written in the hieroglyphics of the coming
of the messiah”- Troy Kingi.
