Get Ready to be “ALONE” – a Heart-Racing Journey Through the Stars

Dusty Room Productions is proud to present the world premiere staging of Alone – a heart-racing intergalactic exploration of what, or who, is really worth saving.

Performed among the incredible artefacts and stories from New Zealand’s aviation history at MOTAT’s Sir Keith Park Memorial Aviation Display, Alone will transport the audience to the cosmos, while asking them to question the choices they make back here on Earth.

At the tail-end of the 2020 Auckland Fringe Festival, audiences will be invited into the not-so-distant future aboard a crowdfunded spacecraft called The Lily of the Nile. Piloted by a two-woman crew (played by Courtney Bassett8 Reasonable Demands, The First Time, and Kat GlassInteroception, Proof), the pair transport a precious cargo – a small sample of an alien microbacteria that may hold the solution to an Earth ravaged by climate change. But when something goes wrong with their ship, the two must combine their strengths and learn to put aside their differences if they have any chance of making it out alive.

Written and directed by Auckland filmmaker Luke Thornborough with support from scientific advisors at Auckland University, Alone draws inspiration from films such as Alien and Interstellar to create a haunting and claustrophobic psychological thriller, bringing science fiction to the stage. Known for his internationally recognised short film work (Jess, Skin and Stay), Alone marks his bold return to a first love of live theatre. “Alone is a test of the human condition. The strife of the crew stands as a metaphor for our own times – we are on a planet bound for disaster and our only chance of making it through is to put aside our differences and find strength (and love) in one another.”

With Alone, Dusty Room Productions continues to take ambitious risks in its exploration of human connection and the cultivation of hope. “We are tremendously excited to be taking a leap into the future and attempt something brand new for Dusty Room Productions, but ultimately, empathy is still at the core of the story,” says Alone Producer Briar Collard. “Auckland Fringe is the perfect first step in what is looking to be a thrilling adventure for the work, the team behind it and hopefully everybody who gets to see it!”
