New Music Friday: 13th Floor New Album Picks: February 9, 2024

The 13th Floor’s Marty Duda picks these five new releases for your consideration:

1. Brittany Howard – What Now (Island) It’s the second solo album from the Alabama Shakes frontperson. Says Howard, “What Now is what the world felt like. I remember somebody said it was like some aliens landed and people were just like, ‘I don’t care.’ It was just blow after blow of unprecedented things happening and trying to hang on to your soul through all of that.”

2. Tyler Ramsey – New Lost Ages (Soundly Music) Driven by a new power trio and produced by Phil Ek, here’s what the former Band Of Horses guitarist has to say about New Lost Ages, “This is an album of hope and this is an album of despair. It is an album of shadows and light. It is about the calm that follows the storm and it’s about the dark clouds when they roll back in again.” 

3. Chelsea Wolfe – She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She (Loma Vista) Wolfe explains: “It’s a record about the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance. “It’s a story of freeing yourself from situations and patterns that are holding you back in order to become self-empowered. It’s an invitation to step into your authenticity.”

4. Matt Joe Gow – The Woodshed Sessions (Self) Matt revisits favourites from his catalogue live and acoustic. Says Matt, “Although not an official studio album, I think people will enjoy the stripped back all acoustic nature with a focus on lyrics & 3 part harmonies, plus it is recorded live in one take!”

5. Tinsley Ellis – Naked Truth (Alligator) Tinsley’s first-ever solo acoustic album. On Naked Truth (his 21st album), Ellis swaps his blistering, guitar-fueled full band workouts  for equally passionate, soul-searching acoustic folk blues. “This  is a record I’ve always wanted to make, and one that my longtime fans  have been asking for,” Ellis says, noting he’s included an acoustic  mini-set in his concert performances for years.
