Post Malone – Outer Fields at Western Springs: November 21, 2023

Post Malone returned to Auckland, this time headlining a massive show at Western Springs where 20,000 fans made it feel like a Big Day Out.

They say The Postman Always Rings Twice. If so, Austin Post, aka Post Malone, aka Postie, must have got the memo. After opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in January, Post was back making a triumphant return is from for thousands of adoring fans.

Post MaloneEven the dark clouds forming as the doors opened couldn’t put a dampener on the night. The was a brief sprinkle, the grass was a bit mushy, but otherwise all was good as Dope Lemon (aka Angus Stone) got things going just after 7pm.

Stone and his crew set the mood as the well-behaved crowd bought their food and drinks and settled in for the night.

Little did we know that a couple of audience members would soon be on-stage with their hero.

Post Malone took the stage at about 8:30 amid a fanfare of strings and applause.

“I love you so much!” gushed Austin. “I know we were here just a little while ago.” And then we got into the meat of the show, beginning with Zack and Codeine from Beerbongs and Bentleys.

The sound was typical big, outdoor quality, but there was little wind, which made it much Post Maloneeasier to hear as Post continued to gush between songs.

“The energy here is insane!”

What was insane was Post drinking out of someone shoe that was thrown on stage. As he sipped he noted the “hints of oak and strawberry”. Yum.

Other highlights included young Rachel who clambered up from the crowd and played guitar on Stay…a truly memorable moment for all concerned…and Daniel who took off his shirt to expose his Post Malone tattoo that covered most of his back.

The evening ended with confetti and cannons as Post Malone and his band sent us off into the still-threatening skies.

The tour is titled, If Y’all Weren’t Here, I’d Be Crying. Well, there was no need to cry tonight.
