Princess Chelsea says Everything Is Going To Be Alright
Princess Chelsea has some reassuring words for these troubled times. Here is her new song, Everything Is Going To Be Alright.
And to make things even better, its the title track to her new album. Here’s the record company blurb with more:
February 25, 2022: Princess Chelsea is the musical project of Chelsea Nikkel (she/her), a musician and songwriter based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland).
Princess Chelsea’s cinematic pop has always worn its influence on it’s sleeve. She takes warm melodies found in songs from 60s girl groups like the Shangri-Las, and brews it with elements of noise, grunge, and doom. It’s creates an atmosphere that is singular to her output.
Today Princess Chelsea shares a new single Everything Is Going To Be Alright, the title track from her new album, expected to be released in September 2022, via Lil Chief Records.
Nikkel took a hiatus from live music at the end of 2018 for health reasons, moving in with her parents on Waiheke Island. In between hiking and fishing, she has quietly crafted her new record in her bedroom – engineering and producing all tracks.
“I started recording this single in 2019 when I was going through a rough patch” says Nikkel. “You can hear the tension – someone trying to convince themselves that everything is OK even if it’s not.” Nikkel notes that “Everything Is Going To Be alright also features a vocal canon which is going to crop up on a number of the new songs. It is my year of vocal canons and guitar feedback.”
The video for Everything Is Going To Be Alright was filmed in Glenorchy, a small settlement 45 minutes drive from Queenstown.
“I went to a petting farm with no intention to make a video or film. However, I accidentally got this amazing one shot that lasted 3 minutes and in my eyes was undeniably cinematic.”
“Also I reckon I was unconsciously channeling Stuart Page’s infamous video for AFFCO by Skeptics – he’s making my next vid, so it should be special! Sorry for ripping you off Stu!”
Princess Chelsea’s upcoming album, which she terms affectionately her ‘nervous breakdown’ album, will be her most guitar-based yet. The album promises to be full of positive mantras with the lyric ‘Everything is Going To Be Alright’ re-appearing throughout the record.
A classically trained pianist, Nikkel lent her talents to self-professed “circus punk” act Teen Wolf in the mid-2000s, and later in the touring lineup of indie pop outfit the Brunettes. When she wasn’t performing, she worked as a composer for a local recording studio, all the while refining her songwriting and production skills.
Her full-length debut as Princess Chelsea, Lil’ Golden Book, was released in late 2011 and first set the template of her music with its sweet melodies, baroque musical arrangements, childlike vocal delivery, and lyrics filled with cynical wit. The album spawned the viral hit Cigarette Duet with its 70 million YouTube views (and counting).
Next up was a synth-heavy sci-fi opera about a future world rendered helpless in the face of depression brought on by technology, The Great Cybernetic Depression was released by Lil’ Chief and Flying Nun in June 2015 and followed soon after by an album of cover versions, Aftertouch. Chelsea’s songwriting chops reached new heights on her album, Loneliest Girl, though the album continued to feature her trademark arrangements using classic 80s Synths (Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50), ambient guitars, and orchestral instruments though in a more refined and simple manner than on her previous releases. This album spawned another mighty online hit ‘I Love My Boyfriend‘ which has over 15 million streams on Spotify alone.
