R.I.P. Millie Small (of My Boy Lollipop Fame)
Jamaican singer Millie Small has passed away at the age of 73.
Small’s recording of My Boy Lollipop is probably one of the most influential “one hit wonders” ever released…introducing millions of music lovers to the joys of Ska, Blue Beat, Rock Steady and eventually Reggae.
My Boy Lollipop was released in 1964 and produced by Chris Blackwell, who went on to found Island Records and produce Bob Marley & The Wailers. But for many, Millie Small was their introduction to Jamaican music. Oh, and that’s Ernest Ranglin on guitar.
