R.I.P. Phil May (Pretty Things)

Another death of another great rocker…Phil May, singer for The Pretty Things, has died after complications following surgery at the age of 75.

The Pretty Things were one of the most revered bands to come out of the London R&B scene of the early 1960s…the same scene that spawned The Rolling Stones. In fact, Dick Taylor, longtime guitarist for the Pretties, was an early member of The Stones.

The Pretty Things began their career with  a string of blues-based hits such as Don’t Bring Me Down and Rosalyn (both covered by Bowie on Pinups) then getting more “progressive” with the “rock opera” SF Sorrow released in 1968, well ahead of The Who’s Tommy.

The band went through numerous lineup changes, but at the end Phil May and Dick Taylor were still bustin’ out the blues. Longtime New Zealand rockers will remember their notorious 1965 tour and the antics of drummer Viv Prince. The Pretty Things returned to NZ (without Viv Prince) and performed at The Powerstation in 2012.
