Sandy Mill – A Piece of Me (Independent)

A Piece of Me feels like a celebration and, dare I say it, a little bit of a relief for singer songwriter Sandy Mill. This is the first time she has stepped up to the microphone in her own right and taken the spotlight, and in my opinion it’s about time.

You may not immediately recognise Sandy’s name but I guarantee you will know a number of artists that do. Over the years, Sandy has collaborated with SJD, The Bellbirds, Don McGlashan, Boy George, Basement Jaxx, Graham Brazier, Hammond Gamble, Dave Dobbyn, Neil Finn to name quite a few. Now you get a chance to hear why they love her so much.

A Piece of Me technically is an EP but when the needle hits the vinyl, it has a real ‘album’ feel to it with a range of styles and maturity of sound that is far greater as a whole and which demands you to play it all in one session.

Opening with the first single Let It Go, the vibe and sound become self-evident. Though being the most poppy, up-beat, and radio-friendly track, it has the grittiness and polish that captures an intentional live sound while still allowing the main instrument (Sandy’s vocals) to shine through.  It’s a bit of a family affair this one as well, with hubby Andrew Park playing bass (and part of the band) and their son James on piano.

Light of Day and Hey Debonair that close off Side One have a more soulful gospel sound and not only showcases Sandy’s influences but highlight her writing skills as well.

Side Two kicks off with the latest single, Giftbox. It is such a familiar yet fresh, cruisy anthem that would play perfectly on those long, hot summer nights with good friends by the beach and the sizzle of a BBQ in the background. It’s also my favourite track on the album.

Charade brings the curtain down on the album and, while being the most reflective track, it is a wonderful way to close. Sandy’s vocals are really allowed to shine here with a warmth and depth that you can’t help but admire and smile along to.

A nod goes to co-producer and engineer Nick Abbot whose pedigree includes Robert Plant, The Datsuns, and Crowded House.  He has really showcased Sandy’s vocals by providing a live clean sound that isn’t over-produced and gives space where needed. The rest of the band are tight with backing vocals supplied by the iconic Dianne Swann and Sean Donnelly.

This album left me wanting more, a lot more, which is a good thing.  Buy the vinyl album if you can but remember when you pop it on for the first time and you hear a male voice (like I did), don’t freak out, just adjust the speed to 45rpm!

A Piece of Me is due out on May 4 2018
