Seymour Stein Has Died At Age 80: R.I.P.
Seymour Stein, the record exec who brought you Talking Heads, Ramones and Madonna, has died at age 80 from cancer.
Born in New York City in 1942, Stein got his start in the record biz in Cincinnati, Ohio, working for King Records in the late 1950, while still a teenager. He eventually founded Sire record in the mid-1960s, with early singings such as Barclay James Harvest, The Climax Blues Band and The Deviants. By the late 70s, Sire was distributed by Warners and was on the cutting edge of “the new wave’ with bands like Talking Heads, The Ramones and The Pretenders. The label also did quite well with a young lady who called herself Madonna.
Other notable Sire artists include: Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smith and Echo & The Bunnymen.
Stein ran the label until he retired in July 2018.
