At 10pm The Whammy bar is crowded and when Dual come on stage just before 10.20pm it is clear they have evolved since I last saw them. They have added live drums to support Maurice Miller’s vocals and electronics, and Jamie Pyne’s guitar.
Nikita Tu-Bryant, with her back-combed bouffant, looks poised and triumphant as the trio called Kita take the stage. With the opening salvo from the drummer, a Ginger Baker-style rapid-fire assault, they run through most of the tracks from newly-minted debut album Kita.
The Phoenix Foundation & Dianne Swann. The shared birthday weekend has sparked a celebration on the left-side of the Spark Arena. I wonder who’s having more fun, The Queen or The Tuning Folk’s patrons as it’s inaugurated birthday series thrusts into full swing.
Monumental music of towering soundscapes and primal energy. Jakob could be three monks who suddenly materialise on stage and proceed to play music which is eternal like the weather.
Princess Chelsea & LEAO & Vincent H.L played a live-streamed show at Whammy on Saturday night. Dedee W was there to tell us all about it.
More good vibes at The Wine Cellar this weekend as Keeley Shade and friends put on a show to promote her new EP, Give Me Time.
It was the Meow label showcase – The Butlers, Molly and the Chromatics, There’s a Tuesday & Michael James Keane. They rocked Auckland’s Powerstation, unleashing an energy and spirit that is pure New Zealand.
The Julie Lamb Outfit play easy-listening Rock from the early days of FM radio, real DJ’s and American Top Forty. Music as comfortable as the pajamas’ some of the band are wearing. Great ensemble playing and packed with enough Soul, Funk and R’n’B to satisfy the most jaded palate.
While the indie kids were making sweet music at Wine Cellar, Sea Mouse and their friends were making a much bigger noise next door at Whammy.
