TEEKS’ first headline show with APO

Soul singer TEEKS will headline his first ever New Zealand show in March when he joins the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) for its successful Session Series at Auckland Town Hall on 28 March.

Following on from a sell-out concert with Kiwi music collective LEISURE in April 2018, the APO Session Series, presented by Hallertau Brewery, returns for an evening with TEEKS (Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi), an artist who is making a name for himself as a talented songwriter with an extraordinary, rich and nostalgic voice belying his 25 years.

This concert marks TEEKS’ very first national headline concert and the opportunity to perform his own music backed by the 72-piece Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra provides a fitting way to deliver what TEEKS’ live performances have become synonymous with, a truly unforgettable moment in time.

“I feel extremely humbled to be given this opportunity. Performing alongside an orchestra has always been a fantasy of mine, and to be playing my own material makes it pretty special,” TEEKS says. “To hear the full force of an orchestra play your songs, songs you might have written in your bedroom a few years ago none the wiser, it is crazy to imagine. I’m so excited to see what we can do together,” he adds.

Since the release of TEEKS’ critically acclaimed debut EP The Grapefruit Skies in 2017, TEEKS has been on a powerful trajectory collecting awards and nominations as well as delivering momentous live performances earning him legions of fans.

In the few years since he emerged as one to watch, TEEKS has been nominated for a prestigious Taite Music Prize, a Silver Scroll, and several New Zealand Music Awards, picking up the inaugural award for Best Māori Artist in 2018.

The APO will join TEEKS to perform a selection of his current and new music in an intimate acoustic concert experience. Composer and arranger Mahuia Bridgman-Cooper has been selected by TEEKS to reimagine his music into full orchestral arrangements.

Doors open at 8pm, with the APO opening the evening with a short programme of orchestral music. TEEKS will then take to the stage, together with the APO conducted by David Kay.

For those wanting to upgrade their experience, Hallertau Brewery is once again bringing back the popular Hallertau Lounge experience at the Town Hall. People who purchase VIP tickets can enjoy exclusive bar and lounge access with no queues, as well as securing the best seats in the house. All ticket holders will have access to the main bar before and during the concert, with a choice selection of Hallertau beers available for purchase.

The first release of tickets at the special price of $45 goes on sale at 9:00am, Thursday 7 February on the APO website and Ticketmaster.
