The Axeman Cometh; Metal News 19th Feb

Recent controversy surrounds NZ’s longest running metal radio show ‘The Axe Attack’; it seems the powers that be have axed it from the Sunday slot. The website has been de-registered, which brings a bit of doubt to the story the Rock is just doing up the offices, as does the Paul Martins statement ‘I would love to comment but I can’t’. A facebook group ‘bring back the Axe Attack’ has been set up, head over and give it a like; Pauls contribution to NZ Metal can’t be overstated, so I hope The Rock do the right thing.

Speaking of Axemen coming, hot on the heels of the remastered ‘Arise’ (truly beautiful, check it out), this week saw the brilliant news that Tau Cross has signed with Relapse Records. Comprised of AMEBIX vocalist/bassist Rob “The Baron” Miller, VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, MISERY guitarist Jon Misery and WAR//PLAGUE guitarist Andy Lefton, TAU CROSS formed in 2013 and recorded its debut album over several months in 2014 throughout three different countries. The record is slated for a late spring release, and it sounds like they will be touring US/Europe. Here’s hoping for a little love Downunder!

If you have a few extra bucks kicking it in your back pocket, head over to ‘A Slave to the Grind’, a kickstarter page hoping to get a documentary about Grindcore made. Slave To The Grind is the first official documentary on Grindcore, by director Doug Brown and it looks fascinating. They want to keep it DIY, which is appropriate, so every cent counts.

Aiight, so again, there are a bunch of events coming up. Here are a few of them.

Tonight (Thursday 19th Feb) at the Kings Arms is DragonForce, Red Dawn and Storm Forge returning after a eight year absence. Last night’s gig at Valhalla looked hella fun, so check it out if you are able.

If you are lucky enough to be in Wellington on Saturday 21st February, head to Valhalla for Black Metal Sabbath. If Black Sabbath formed in Norway in 1990 things might have been different…

Featuring members of Skuldom, Malevolence and Anno Domini Mortus this supergroup of extreme metal is coming to lay waste to Wellington’s Valhalla. With support from Pervertor and old school black metal DJing courtesy of Nightmare666 this promises to be a congregation of the unholiest NZ has to offer! Worship at the altar you lucky ducks!
