Introducing a brand-new column on the 13th Floor: The Metal News from Tove, doyenne of all things metal.

So, we get to the last month of the year, and what a good one it has been! Highlights for me were definitely Korpiklaani and the beautiful M.D.C. But the year ain’t over, so here are a few gigs for the coming weeks, to get you through the jingly spirit and terrible christmas music assaulting our ears. It’s a busy month, so I will cover the first half of Dec, and hopefully have enough for a later instalment. Check facebook for more details of the following listings. On the 4th of December we have – celebrating their 30 year anniversary – experimental sludge godfathers MELVINS play one New Zealand show only. The Powerstation, tickets are $58 from ticketmaster.co.nz.

On the 5th-7th of December we have the long awaited Auckland Heavy Metal band Subtract’s fifth release; Talk Minus Actio

Thursday 5th December – Dux Live, Christchurchn Equals Nothing.

• Friday 6th December – Bodega, Wellington
  with Shakahn and Gift of Ruin – $10 at the door

On Friday the 6th is Black Metal Sabbath, Bloodfvkk, and Trepidation. Black Metal Sabbath cover Black Sabbath with a metal edge, Bar Eden. $10, or $5 with a student ID.

On Saturday the 7th, Aucklanders have to make a choice. We have “December to Dismember” at the Dogs Bollix, featuring PUPPETEER from Tauranga and INTERGRACIA from Welly, joined by some locals, for $10.

On Sunday the 8th of December we have the Dying of the Light’s EP release up at the famous 13th floor itself.

Sunday seems to be a day for releases, as Wellington has it’s own, with Bulletbelt playing at Vanishing Point, 251 Cuba St, Wellington – to honour the vinyl release of ‘Down In The Cold Of The Grave’! Afternoon show, free.

On Friday the 13 down in Welly is the last night of Bar Medusa, before the re-branding; ASHES OF THE GORGON Six bands, great drink specials, it looks to be a great night.

Saturday the 14th Down in the Hutt, More Metal At the Tav feat Dying of the Light, Ovus, The Heathen Collective, Dislocate. Rimutaka Tavern, Upper Hutt, $10 at the door.

The Warehouse of Death end of year party is on the 14th up in Auckland. Martin is stunningly allowing a hoard of bogans over his threshold, at 1/90 Elizabeth Knox place, St Johns, Auckland. Feat. Exordium Mors, Cephalopod, Horrendous Disfigurement, Extinction Campaign and Inside Arkham, all for $5 and BYO. Should be a brilliant night, so turn up!

Organectomy and Plague of the Fallen hit the stage together on the 20th of December down in Chch, Churchills Tavern, 441 Colombo St. $5 door sales. More bands to be announced!

It just wouldn’t be christmas without Masters of Metal! On Friday the 20th of December your M.O.M is turning 10! Xmas extravaganza party at the Kings Arms, giveaways, prizes and mischief! $10 on the door.

So get along to as many events as you can, and bank up your metal spirit to get you through those long family arguments about cutting your hair and getting a real job that are just around the corner.
