EVENTS:
Gathered Islands A Celebration of the Pacific
WED 6 NOV, 6PM – 9.30PM FREE, BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL, EVENT CENTRE
A very special free performance from Va’a Hono and Ahutoru Nui. This group from Tahiti will be performing Tahitian song and dance, filling our Event Centre with sound, movement and celebration.
Over 50 performers will tell their story, A History of Tupaia the Navigator, from a uniquely Tahitian perspective.

Detour: The Good, the Bag and the Ugly

$35 PER TICKET, $30 FOR GROUPS OF 6 AND OVER. BOOKINGS REQUIRED
Back by popular demand our Detour: The Good, the Bag and the Ugly tours with a twist return.
joined us on this tour-with-a-difference as we pick apart the history, hysteria and hidden stories behind the bags in the Carried Away: Bags Unpacked exhibition.
De-tours are thirsty work and so they will conclude with a cream scone and hot beverage at our 1929 cafe.

Remembrance Sunday

Join us on Remembrance Sunday to reflect on the sacrifices of our servicemen and women.
Auckland Girls’ Choir perform to commemorate those who lost their lives.

Armistice Commemoration

Join our Armistice Day memorial service as we remember all those who served and those who have given their lives in military service.
 
Audio Description – Carried Away: Bags Unpacked
SUN 17 NOV, 9AM & WED 20 NOV, 2PM, FREE, BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL
Blind and low vision visitors are invited to join our specially trained volunteer guides for an audio described tour of our current exhibition Carried Away: Bags Unpacked, in its final month.
These audio described tours are free, but places are limited to 6 per tour.
Sighted companions and guide dogs are welcome.

Fire in the Water, Fire in the Sky
MON 18 – FRI 22 NOV, 11AM, 11.45AM & 12.30PM, PACIFIC LIFEWAYS GALLERY, FREE
Told through movement, ‘ura, song and theatre, Fire in the Water, Fire in the Sky is a cautionary tale of greed, destruction and big business. This call of hope has been presented in art galleries and museums around Aotearoa, and we are proud to host it here at Auckland Museum.
This is an innovative promenade performance, from Tawata Productions, runs for around 30 minutes and will be presented three times daily.

CARRIED AWAY: BAGS UNPACKED
ON NOW – 1 DEC 2019, AUAHA ATEA NUI SPECIAL EXHIBITION HALL, FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY
Handbags, plastic bags, backpacks, chatelaines, kete, briefcases, inrō, misers’ purses, basikete, and bilum, these everyday objects reflect diverse uses across various cultures.
Carried Away: Bags Unpacked ‘unpacks’ over 150 bags, exploring the stories associated with their creation, and the people who made and used them.
The Allen and Unwin book Carried Away: Bags Unpacked is available in stores now, RRP $39.99.
 
Photographing Early Auckland 1850s – 1870s
ON NOW, SAINSBURY HORROCKS GALLERY, FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY
The earliest photo of Auckland on record was taken around 1857 – marking the beginning of landscape photography in the city.
This small exhibition records changes over time to the shoreline of the Waitematā, and immediate surrounds through historical Auckland photography.
Explore the Auckland CBD; and identify current locations that are barely recognisable today.

VOYAGE TO AOTEAROA: TUPAIA AND THE ENDEAVOUR

Journey through our special exhibition Voyage to Aotearoa: Tupaia and the Endeavour at Auckland Museum.
You and your family can experience life as it was 250 years ago in our action-packed exhibition.  Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the world of Tupaia, the Tahitian navigator, high priest and artist, as he journeys on the Endeavour to Aotearoa New Zealand.
With three parts to this exhibition, each with family-friendly interactive activities, we feature the little-known story of Tupaia and the significant role he played in James Cook’s first voyage. Experience life as a sailor, navigate your vessel across the ocean, watch Tupaia’s paintings come to life, and more.

A must-see, world-class exhibition enjoyed all over the world by nature lovers and photographers, the exhibition illustrates the majesty and vulnerability of life on our planet – from big fin squid to a marmot being ambushed by a Tibetan fox, from army ants to American bison. Whilst inspiring curiosity and wonder, the images also remind us of the fragility of our planet and our responsibility to protect it. This free exhibition is a chance to view these stunning photographs, beautifully illuminated, up close and in person.

Ata Hira: Museum on the Move will be on tour around Aotearoa and visiting different landing sites that the Endeavour visited as well as being part of Tuia 250 Commemorations.
This “Pop Up Museum” is based around multiple perspectives of Tupaia’s life in Tahiti, on board the Endeavour and his arrival to Aotearoa.

Tiaki Mauri Bioblitz

BioBlitz is taking place in your backyard and this is your chance to discover more about the flora and fauna of the local environment.
Join staff from Auckland Museum along with research partners and local iwi who are examining changes to local species from 1769 to present day.
Come along to the Tiaki Mauri BioBlitz marquee on Saturday 30 November at Wairoa Bay, Ipipiri and see some of the plants, animals and fungi specimens collected, and talk to our experts who will share their discoveries.
